maiasaura

Classification: Ornithischia, ornithopoda, hadrosaurid

Body length: 9 m

Body weight: 4 t

Epoch: Late Cretaceous

Locations: USA, Canada

Maiasaura was a large herbivorous duck-billed dinosaur. Maiasaura was the first type of dinosaur, found together with cubs, eggs and nests. This shows that they used to care of their young.

A discovery of ten thousand of maiasaura fossils in one place in Montana is a strong indication that they used to live in herds. They walked on all fours and were rather fast.

The front legs were much shorter than the back legs. Running was their only way of escaping predators.
